S.B.K. Unlimited Update: Peak Performance

garage26.jpgScott Kriscenski, S.B.K. Unlimited:

Last week we framed the roof with 2x8 rafters and rafter ties (horizontal timbers at ceiling height).

The ridge board is a 22 ft long 2x12. We made posts to receive the ridge and stood them up with bracing. The ridge is dropped in after the rafter locations are marked on it.

In this case the ridge is protruding out of the building 18" in the front and back to pick up flying rafters. The flying rafters will eventually sit on decorative brackets but for now are on a temporary 2x4.

We check that the tops of our walls are straight and then nail in all the rafters. It's important that you alternate sides as you install the rafters so the ridge doesn't get pushed off center. A layer of 1/2" CDX plywood, some tar paper and we're done.

This is a 12 pitch roof to match the existing house (pitch measurement is rise in inches per foot). We are also matching other trim details of the main house including rounded bottoms on the exposed rafter tails and similar details to the gable trim. This week we've been working on roof trim so Duncan can come shingle the roof.
